Music ————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————

Welcome to my music shrine! Here I've documented all of my favourite music, artists, albums, genres etc. There's also mini shrines for artists that are especially dear to my heart. I like a lot of different music, I listen to it on a daily basis 24/7 and there's a lot of genres that I enjoy. I think it's an integral part of myself and if we have similar music taste we're sure to get along.
————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————
My favourite genre by far has to be industrial and all of it's subgenres, it's a very vast and diverse genre with many different influences. It's changed over the decades and evolved with time to incorporate multiple different sounds. The most popular genre of industrial is industrial metal, which includes a lot of metal-like sounds, stuff you'd hear in a factory, gritty guitars and synthesizers. It's by far my favourite out of the bunch and with how diverse the artists are it is really enjoyable to listen to on a regular basis. I also enjoy the EBM (electronic body music) subgenre, it features similar factory-like sounds with elements of dance music and electronic sounds. It's dark, gritty, fast and really fucking good to dance to.
————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————
Like I said earlier, I enjoy a whole range of different genres, some more of these include nu metal, new wave/goth, happy hardcore, nightcore, EDM, trance, 2000's pop and 80's pop. They're all pretty different from one another but I like them all for different reasons, but honestly I will listen to anything that I really like the beat to. I do really enjoy nu metal, however I feel like I've out grown it as a genre and only come back to songs or artists I really enjoy like Limp Bizkit or Linkin Park. I do also love Orgy and Deadsy they bridge the gap between nu metal, industrial and a little new wave. I have a similar experience with pop-punk, which I used to absolutely love as a teenager however I feel like I've definitely out grown it, my all time favourites being Fall Out Boy and My Chemical Romance which still hold a dear place in my heart even though I don't listen to them much anymore. I LOVE happy hardcore and EDM, that shit gets me super hyped and of course my all time favourite is S3RL, he just can't be unmatched. Also I really love europop, eurodance, etc which could fit within here. Nothing will beat listening to 100% Clubland and jamming the hell out, especially when your dad likes it and showed you it as a kid, LOL. I really love music with a good beat and a breakdown. Nightcore can also be wedged in here too, honestly Nightcore is just an all time classic I've been listening since I was 12 and I still listen to it, especially when it's EDM or europop.

nine inch nails and me
I first got into Nine Inch Nails in August of 2024 because my boyfriend Dirk loves them and i wanted to see what all the hype was about. safe to say i was completely hooked the moment i did and i literally listened to them on repeat for months.

this band means a lot to me, it's everything i could ever ask for in a musical artist and it's hard to ever be disappointed in their music. Nine Inch Nails is a comfort artist to me especially because they remind me a lot of dirk, the downward spiral especially being one of my favourites because of its "storyline" and meanings. head like a hole also in particular reminds me of dirk so i love it a lot.

i got to see Nine Inch Nails live on their peel it back tour in June 2025 and it was (almost) everything i wanted, the only thing i'd change is if dirk was with me and they played more pretty hate machine, but other than that it was a night i will never forget and not only the concert but the club experience i went to afterwards was phenomenal. i also made a friend at the concert and it was really life changing to me.

the downward spiral is hands down one of my favourite albums of all time, the writing, the music, the story, even the remixes all of it is so brilliant to me to the point i've picked it all apart for everything it has and wrote about its meanings myself. words cannot explain how unfortunately misread this album is because when you truly get into it, it's depressing. it's heart wrenching to know every detail and how trent was feeling when he wrote this. i truly do think it's one of the best albums of all time and it deserves every bit of praise and recognition it gets.
what is nine inch nails
nine inch nails is an industrial rock band formed by trent reznor in 1988. he created nine inch nails as a one-man band and had a set live band to play with him for shows, however in 2016 atticus ross joined nine inch nails after him and trent worked on movie soundtracks together and now they work together to create nine inch nails. every NIN release is marked as a "halo", with the single "down in it" being halo 1.

trent has historically had many issues with record labels, with him jumping from TVT to interscope, creating his whole record label, columbia records, to then publishing music independently. he has always critized record labels for the freedom of creative control and financial disagreements. he ended up creating his own record label, nothing records, that worked within interscope, along with nine inch nails the record also released records from marilyn manson, pig, 2wo and others. nothing records ultimately went defunct in 2004 after a lawsuit between trent and john malm, nine inch nails' former manager.

nine inch nails are held as the pioneers of industrial rock and the band to really push it forwards into mainstream, however i believe nine inch nails is more than just industrial rock and features a deep root in synth-pop and gothic rock, which is most prevelant in their first album "pretty hate machine". trent has always talked about his influences within music and those include gary numan, soft cell, joy divison, ministry, coil, depeche mode, david bowie, bauhaus, throbbing gristle, skinny puppy and more. nine inch nails features very similar styles to all of these artists and you can really see trent's inspiration for them come in, it's plastered all over his music and i think it's a fundamental core of the nine inch nails sound.

okay that's all i'm gonna write because i seriously could go on forever about this band it's frontman, if you like what you're hearing please listen to nine inch nails they are one of the best artists of all time and they are truly influential to the entirety of music in so many different ways.

discography

halo 1: down in it
release date: September 15 1989
genre: Industrial
personal rating: 3/5
the first ever song written for nine inch nails, directly inspired by "dig it" by skinny puppy, with influences from ministry too. i really enjoy this song and it's industrial influences, i like the electronic-synth sounds that work well with the more industrial-gritty sounds, trent is very good at composing and even on the first nin song he shows that. i don't think it's anything to write home about however it is a really solid first single.

halo 2: pretty hate machine
release date: October 20 1989
genre: Synth-Pop, Industrial Rock
favourite song: sin
personal rating: 4/5
i really love this album, it's one of the first nin albums that i really grew to enjoy so it holds a dear place in my heart and i think it's a really good piece of synth-pop. you can really tell trent's synth inspirations in this one, he uses them in such an aggressive way that brings in the more rock and industrial sound he's so well known for. this record is really solid and i like the heavy themes of lovesickness and angst that are prevelant all throughout. this combined with the aggressive synths makes him and the music sound really heart broken and betrayed, he portrays these emotions really well within his music.

halo 3: head like a hole
release date: March 22, 1990
genre: Industrial Rock
personal rating: 5/5
head like a hole is a REALLY good industrial rock song, with deep aggressive synths, vocals and lyrics that truly make the song what it is. i don't really know what else to say this song is gnarly and gritty and i really fucking love it. it's also special to me because it's dirk's favourite song and the lyrics always remind me of him, and funnily enough it's one of the nine inch nails songs i listened to years ago and didn't like that much but listening to it now i feel like an insane person for ever considering it to not be fantastic.

halo 4: sin
release date: October 10, 1990
genre: Synth-Pop, Industrial Rock
personal rating: 5/5 (phm ver) 3/5 (single ver)
sin is one of my favourite nine inch nails songs of all time, the beat, the lyrics, the synths, they are fantastic. the build up between choruses and the little sounds within the song all make it one masterpiece and i think it's also closely similar sound-wise to broken and TDS. this single also features the song "get down, make love" which is a queen cover. can i just say this cover is SO much better than the OG LOL. i do think trent captures the fullness of the original though and tbh it works as a standalone nine inch nails song. the sin featured on this song is actually different to the album cut (which is what i was talking about in my first sentences). i do really enjoy this single version aswell as it's more EBM sounding however it's missing parts that are my favourite bits from the PHM version of sin. i really love the heavy synths though and trent's distorted voice.

halo 5: broken
release date: September 22, 1992
genre: industrial metal
favourite song: last
personal rating: 5/5
i really love this ep, it's such a stark contrast from what pretty hate machine was it's really surpising how different they are. this ep is fast paced, full of guitars, metalled to hell and features a really insane short film of music videos to the songs that was never officially released due to it being violent and graphic (you can find it on their website btw). this ep was trent experimenting with a metal sound and he pulled it off really well, happiness in slavery and last are easily my favourite songs, they feature such a dark, industrial sound that is really prevelant throughout this entire record. the last minute of "last" is my favourite part of the entire ep. i also feel like this ep has more sadism elements because of both of these songs and i really enjoy that part of it. also pinion, lol.

halo 6: fixed
release date: December 7 1992
genre: industrial rock, noise
favourite song: throw this away
personal rating: 2/5
i generally don't really enjoy nine inch nails remixes just because the original songs are so iconic and well crafted to me it's very weird when someone else has influence over them. this one features remixes from coil, danny hyde, jg thirlwell, butch vig and then-live band member chris vrenna. these songs are all alright, the one that i like the most is "throw this away" purely because it expands more on the last minute of "last", it sounds more deep, melancholic and like trent is begging for someone to just throw him away. it's gritty, truthful and hurting and that's what i also really like about the broken ep as a whole too.

halo 7: march of the pigs
release date: February 25 1994
genre: industrial metal
personal rating: 3/5
we're getting into TDS which are some of the best songs ever produced. march of the pigs is aggressive, fast and dirty. it gets right into action with a ton of instruments and noise all coming at you at once. the song has multiple of these segements and ends them off with a slow piano and soft vocals against the harsh vocals of the verses. it's a REALLY good song to see live because you literally just get thrashed around, it brings quick energy and roughness. also on this single version are "reptillian", "all the pigs, all lined up", "a violet fluid" and "underneath the skin", i will admit the remixes not by trent are not my favourite. however all the pigs, all lined up is MILES better than march of the pigs for me because it brings what was missing to it, which is continuation and a longer song which i really enjoy. i love the touches in the sound of this remix because it highlights the pig aspects more.

halo 8: the downward spiral
release date: March 8 1994
genre: industrial metal
favourite song: mr self destruct
personal rating: 5/5
absolutely phenomenal. this is one of the best albums of all time. an actual work of art in its purest form. every single song on this album is absolutely brilliant and it's incredibly hard to pick a favourite because i love them all equally all for different reasons. this album is industrial metal and it truly brings the grittiness and harshness to it. not only that the sound design of these songs is absolutely genius considering the story that follows these songs. to give a quick run down, this album follows a man who is at battle with himself aka "mr self destruct" and he slowly becomes taken over by this persona and becomes him, eventually mr self destruct pushes the man to suicide. this whole album is a beautiful but haunting story of a man losing his mind. the song "heresy" however doesn't really have much to do with the storyline because trent specifically wrote it about the aids epidemic, it's a really powerful song to me and how trent writes about god here is a really powerful sentiment because of how brainwashed christians can be. i suppose i can't talk about TDS without mentioning closer. this song is so fucking good but it's meaning has been so stripped away from it it makes me sad. i'll talk more about this on this specific song's halo single. however, "ruiner" and "the becoming" are particuarly strong songs for me because of the way they were made and how they sound, you can feel this mr self destruct persona taking over and the man trying to fight it, the becoming of him and how he's literally being constructed (the becoming). it sounds like a factory building a machine and it's just brilliant. like i said the man is eventually driven to suicide and the maniacal track of the album name is haunting to listen to, which is then followed by "hurt". this song can be read in a number of different ways but i like to see it as the man seeing who he has really become. it's a really powerful song i can't really listen to much because of the emotion but it is really something beautiful. i also wanted to mention this album is incredibly influential towards music as a whole with songs like hurt being covered numerous times, the influence it had on bringing industrial music to mainstream. it was an instant success when it released and it's legacy is still apparent today with it being labelled as one of the best produced albums of the 1990s.

halo 9: closer to god
release date: May 30 1994
genre: industrial metal
personal rating: 4/5
my god. this song is so misinterpretated. this song is about self-hatred, obsession, hating yourself so much you think having sex with someone is tainting them. the man wants to feel something, anything, to the point of deep desire and longing that he wants to be broken. he is empty and wants to feel whole by using somebody. this song is so deeply self hating. anyway, i really do love this song and how it feels so violated, i can't really explain. it's deep, guttural and i like how whiny trent is in this song lol. this single also has some remixes on it, i really do enjoy "closer to god", it's more industrial and it's framed more like the man is begging for this, it's desperation. i can understand why the original closer became hurr durr sex song just because it sounds sensual and sexy, but this remix really hones in on the actual meaning. i really like the cover of memorabilia, it fits into TDS really well. i don't really care about the rest of the remixes, sorry..

halo 10: further down the spiral
release date: May 29 1995
genre: industrial, experimental
personal rating: 3/5
favourite song: the downward spiral (the bottom)
again, i'm not really a fan of NIN remixes, however this one is pretty good. i really enjoy the self destruction songs and the remix of the downward spiral (song). i like how the synths are fucked to high hell and really twisted and distorted. the downward spiral remix gives it a kind of new feeling and sound, making the story conclusion feel more like a relief that it's finally over. i also like the remix of piggy, it's more fast-paced and upbeat than the original, the sound is very different but i think it works for this song, it's like giving it a fresh coat of paint.
halo 11: the perfect drug
release date: May 13 1997
genre: industrial pop
personal rating: 4/5 (song) 2/5 (single)
this song was made for the 1997 film "lost highway" which was trent's first time making a song for a movie. i do really like this song, however i feel because he was constrained by the limitations of the movie and maybe what they wanted, it sounds like nine inch nails but if he held back a little and did something different, i'm not really a fan of drum and bass because it sounds repetitive but i think trent did a good job here because i do like the song lol. also the remixes on this single are kinda ehhh, i only like the nin remix LOL.
halo 12: closure
release date: November 25 1997
genre: industrial metal
personal rating: 4/5
this is actually a video album of concerts and bts footage from the self destruct and further down the spiral tours. i really enjoy watching tapes like this because it makes the artist feel more alive in way. i love watching trent just say shit and do shit, it's interesting to me. also trent constantly throwing insturments and breaking shit is so funny, you can tell he really made a stage presence for himself. i like seeing the live bands antics and the shit they got up to.
halo 13: the day the world went away
release date: July 20 1999
genre: industrial
personal rating: 4/5
this single has both the day the world went away, and starfuckers inc on it. i like the title song, i'm not really a fan of slow songs but i like the build up and the guitars. however. i fucking love starfuckers inc. actually GENIUS song i love his critism of the music industry and how gritty the song sounds, the lyrics are so good the way he writes is fantastic. i like that it has a lot of different influences. this song is so good to jump to and thrash around, the build up between choruses makes it so much more hype.
halo 14: the fragile
release date: September 21 1999
genre: Alternative Rock, Industrial
favourite song: starfuckers, inc
personal rating: 4/5
so this album is actually split into 2 discs, and also has some bare instrumentals throughout both. this album is more electronic and ambient than the downward spiral. i'm not really a fan of the ambient tracks as they're just not really my style, but the more electronic/industrial instrumental tracks i do really enjoy, with pilgrimage being my favourite. trent is really good at sound design and bringing story into how he creates his music. i think i like the second disc more than the first, but i really love the actual songs that are on this album, no you don't is another one of my favourites. i enjoy how industrial yet electronic they sound and the direction that trent went when making this.

halo 15: we're in this together
release date: September 27 1999
genre: industrial rock
personal rating: 4/5
i really like this song, it reminds me of me and my boyfriend and i enjoy that... i really like the synths and how it kind of sounds like static. it's a very hopeful song i think i enjoy it in contrast to how nine inch nails lyrics usually go. i think it's a beginning for new, fresher lyrics from trent and i really enjoy it.
halo 16: things falling apart
release date: November 21 2000
genre: industrial
favourite song: metal
personal rating: 4/5
i actually really enjoy this remix album, it keeps the spirit of the songs but changes them around and i really enjoy it. it gives them a different sound but keeps industrial aspects, also i find they also enhance the electronic sound of the fragile too. i like it
halo 17: and all that could have been/still
release date: Jan 22 2002
genre: experimental, ambient
favourite song: the becoming
personal rating: 2/5
i don't really like the ambient tracks or remixes so this album isn't really for me... the only one i like is the remix of the becoming because i like the harsh piano sounds. i also like all that could have been itself, it's a good slow song and not bad for me to listen to. one thing i do like though is when trent sings softly, i really enjoy his voice so it's very soothing and calming.
halo 18: the hand that feeds
release date: March 21 2005
genre: industrial
personal rating: 4/5
i like this song, it doesn't particularly stand out to me or anything though. i like the beat, the lyrics and the guitars that trent included. it sounds kind of new-wave so i enjoy it. i actually like the remixes that are included in this single they make it sound more electronic.
halo 19: with teeth
release date: May 3 2005
genre: industrial rock
favourite song:
personal rating: 3.5/5
i would say this album is more rock-orientated on the industrial spectrum, it features a lot of guitars compared to the other albums which are more synth-heavy. i quite enjoy this album, while it's not my favourite i still appreciate it. i like the heavier sounding tracks and deep sounds. i feel like nin music calmed down a bit after the insanity that was broken and the downward spiral back to back, i understand though because of trent's frame of mind at that time. he made with teeth after becoming sober from drugs so i imagine his mind would be a lot clearer. also sidenote theres a video of a woman saying that the bridge of sunspots the sound of it sounds like trent whisking a cake and it's so funny to me.
halo 20: only
release date: july 25 2005
genre: synth-pop
personal rating: 5/5
i REALLY enjoy this song, it's soo synth-pop you can tell trent's synth inspirations. he pulls it off so well while still giving it a nine inch nails kick and i really appreciate that. i really like trent's vocals in this because he goes from soft to harsh and it sounds real good. the guitars are good and i'm glad he's using them more in his music here because he really knows how to use it with the synth. also this song reminds me of dirk so i enjoy that.
halo 21: every day is exactly the same
release date: April 4 2006
genre: synth-pop
personal rating: 3/5
this song is alright, it's not particularly heavy or anything and sounds more synth-pop than industrial but it's alright. i like trent's voice and i appreciate the lyrics. it's good
halo 22: beside you in time
release date: February 26 2007
genre: industrial metal
personal rating: n/a
this is another video album, i haven't seen this one yet but i will update when i do.
halo 23: survivalism
release date: March 13 2007
genre: industrial
personal rating: 4/5
oooo year zero time. okay i really like this song and has the whole soft slow verses with a booming chorus, i really like the synths in this too. i like the lyrics and what it stands for, i think trent did a really good job on year zero of doing something different yet familiar.
halo 24: year zero
release date: April 17 2007
genre: electro-industrial
favourite song: meet your master
personal rating: 4/5
year zero is a really underrated nine inch nails album, i really really enjoy it alot. not only is this album great but it's also a concept album with a storyline and i find it so interesting. to accompany the storyline trent also made an ARG which used websites, phone messages and more to expand on the storyline. i think it was really well done and i love the concept of a nin arg its so genius, if you're interested more there's a whole youtube video documenting the whole thing which i highly reccommend. i really enjoy the album's storyline and i think it makes the songs even better. trent criticizes the american government and politics with some really good lyrics. this album is more on the electric industrial side and honestly i really enjoy that, it sounds very different from anything they've put out thus far and it's good. also capital G and meet your master remind me of dirk...

halo 25: year zero remixed
release date: November 20 2007
genre: industrial
favourite song: meet your master
personal rating: 2/5
this remix album is. yea i don't really like it that much. i only like meet your master and the beginning of the end, they give them more electro sounds and i like that a lot. the others aren't that great.
halo 26: ghosts i-iv
release date: March 2 2008
genre: dark ambient
favourite song: n/a
personal rating: 1/5
i don't care. im sorry. i dont like ambient. i'm sure it's fine as a soundtrack

halo 27: the slip
release date: May 5 2008
genre: electro-industrial
favourite song: discipline
personal rating: 3.7/5
i enjoy this album, it's odd hearing something that is industrial after so much electronic, but i do really enjoy it. it kind of echoes past nine inch nails records, especially the first few, i really like that. dunno what else to say really i just enjoy this album and it's industrialness

halo 28: hesitation marks
release date: August 30 2013
genre: synth-pop, new wave
favourite song: satellite
personal rating: 3/5
i feel this record is a lot more electro and upbeat than usual nine inch nails records, i do like it however the industrial aspects feel a little left behind and that's what brings the album down for me because there's so little of it. i do like the album i just wish it was less... safe? i'm not sure how to explain. i do like it though and i appreciate what it is.

halo 29: not the actual events
release date: December 23 2016
genre: Industrial Metal, electronic
favourite song: the idea of you
personal rating: 3/5
i find it hard to talk abt the later nin releases because they don't mean as much to me as the older ones, but i think this one is alright. it brings back industrial sounds i was missing and mixes it with the electronic sound of later releases. it's a good album, just again i find it hard to talk about... like yea.. the songs are good.. LOL

yea i actually like this album a lot, it's synth-pop but trent is pretty good at doing that. less than is a good song i just always have had an issue with later nin releases because they lack the kind of punch that older ones do i can't really explain. it's good though
